Watch: Further judicial appointments will depend on whether the need arises - PM

Jeremy Micallef Thursday, 25 April 2019, 18:16 Last update: about 5 years ago

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat could not confirm whether Thursday’s judicial appointments would be the last under the current system as the need for further appointments may arise.

Although improvements were made follow recommendations from various institutions such as the Venice Commission or the Council of Europe, the independence of the judicial appointment system is still put into question by some.

He insisted that it would be impossible to confirm as it would be necessary to undergo this process again, as was done, for example, for the appointment of a member on the European Court of Human Rights.

“What I can say is that the current system is much better than the previous one and we will continue improving on top of it.”
