Former Birkirkara player Thiago Brito was seriously injured in a traffic accident in Brazil in which his wife and niece died, Brazilian media report.

Brito (left) played for Birkirkara during the past season.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

In a statement on its Facebook page, Birkirkara FC said "Everyone involved in Birkirkara FC is saddened to hear the news that former player Thiago Brito has been involved in a traffic accident that left his wife and niece dead, while the player is in a critical condition.

"The club offers its unwavering support to his family in this difficult moment."
