Commemorating Apollo 11: 50th anniversary of the first man on the Moon

Tuesday, 16 July 2019, 09:29 Last update: about 6 years ago

The US Embassy in Malta and the Euro Media Forum will be presenting The Apollo 11 – 50th anniversary of the first man on the moon event on Saturday, 20 July at Palazzo de Piro, Mdina.

50 years on the immortal words “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” and “The Eagle has landed” still ignite excitement. On 20 July 1969 the world held its breath as Neil Armstrong opened the hatch of the Eagle landing craft and made those first historic steps on the Moon surface. The Apollo Mission project was a shining example of what can be achieved when humanity works towards a common goal.

The evening will commence with an introductory speech by Chargé d’Affaires for the US embassy in Malta, Mark A. Schapiro, followed by an informative presentation by Apollo Missions specialist, David Pace. The presentation will touch upon the scientific importance of the actual moon-landing and the benefits derived therefrom. Pace will explain how the moon-landing event itself brought physical evidence to the scientific world and increased our knowledge of the moon. This achievement set us where we stand today, our return to the moon in 2024 with the Artemis project and the more ambitious project to land on Mars. Pace will delve into the scientific facts that evidently debunk the words of conspiratorial theorists who believe that “man never went to the moon and that the whole event was a giant Hollywood-style hoax”, etc. A break will follow where the audience can observe the Apollo 11 exhibition set by Alessandro Bajada.

In conclusion, the audience can participate in a professionally guided moon observation with a professional telescope. The participants are welcome to bring their own telescopes and binoculars to make their own observations.

The Palazzo de Piro hall is fully air-conditioned. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are €20 incl. a welcome drink with prizes to be won.

The event is being supported by the U.S Embassy, Palazzo de Piro and the Esplora Interactive Science Centre.
