Amnesia, Pacha, Ushuaia, Cafe Mambo, Privelege: These are just the names of some of the world famous nightclubs in Ibiza, the beating heart of Europe's nightlife. It is so much so that Ibiza hosts countless residencies for the world's most well-known DJs.

Undoubtedly, Ibiza is the holy-grail of many Maltese EDM aficionados.

For those like me that live and breathe clubbing in the island that never sleeps, Ibiza is no longer half a day away. Thanks to a direct flight from our national carrier Air Malta, those who every summer seek to party in one of the most stunning and exclusive hotspots in the Mediterranean, can reach this jewel in the Balearic Islands in around two hours, which for me is a huge bonus.

Personally, I have been DJing in Ibiza for the past five years. Although the thrill of Ibiza never goes away, I had been growing weary of the toll it took to get there with a connecting flight from Barcelona. It used to take at least seven hours, sometimes even more - and many a time I arrived in Barcelona in the middle of the night with everywhere shut and facing a number of hours crashing on the airport floor before the final flight to Ibiza.

Then, the direct flight was announced, and I was pleased. I was even more so pleased to note that when for the first time I boarded a direct flight to the island from Malta, I was boarding a Maltese aircraft to take me there.

A plane full of Maltese people, eager to discover what Ibiza has to offer and to see and experience for themselves the countless stories and legends from this island in the Western Mediterranean.

As I waited for take-off, I couldn't help but notice that as well as countless Maltese, my flight also contained a number of Italians who used Malta as their connection to Ibiza, and also a number of Spanish who sought to return to Spain via Ibiza.

While obviously synonymous with clubbing and nightlife, Ibiza is also famous for its pearl-white beaches and its crystal-clear waters that make it one of the dream destinations not only for the hours of the night, but also of the day.

I thoroughly commend Air Malta for taking this step of venturing into a previously-untapped market. As a regular commuter to Ibiza, I am sure that this new route is not only providing a direct gateway to the capital of clubbing every summer, but also helping expand the name of Malta among a new cohort of people that will greatly benefit both our airline and the Maltese Islands.
