On Sunday, 1 March, Heritage Malta is organizing an Open Day at the archaeological site of Tas-Silġ in Marsaxlokk. Since 1963, this temple site has been excavated by the Missione Archeologica Italiana and this event will offer an exclusive opportunity for visitors to get to know the site with the guidance of  members of the Missione.

From the first archaeological excavations which were carried out in the 1960s and in the 1970s by the Missione Archeologica Italiana, it was evident that this was a significant archaeological site. The systematic archaeological investigations which were carried out uncovered substantial structural remains of a multi-period sanctuary, ranging from the Neolithic, to the Phoenician, Punic and Late Republican Roman period.

On the other hand, studies by the Department of Classics and Archaeology at the University of Malta which took place to the south of the main site, led to the discovery of a substantial amount of pottery fragments, and animal bones.

This Open Day is being held in collaboration with the Missione Archeologica Italiana, the Italian Embassy in Malta and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura.
