Prime Minister Robert Abela appealed to the police to take immediate action over those who are responsible for the building which collapsed in Ħamrun, regardless of who they might be.
Yesterday, a building located in Joseph Abela Scolari Street, which is adjacent to a construction site, collapsed, taking the life of 54-year-old Miriam Pace who was at home when it all happened.
Four individuals are currently being investigated in this regard; the site technical officer and two workers, who all were held under arrest soon after the accident, the police said in a statement.
Abela told the media that due to such investigations, he has to be careful what he says so as not to affect the on-going investigations.
However, he emphasised that he will be making sure that the police carries out their job to the utmost efficiency without impunity and take those responsible to court.
Asked if there will be an open inquiry to investigate the value of the measure that had been implemented last year by the Infrastructure Ministry, Abela said that he aims to look into these measures and make the required changes so as to ensure they offer a solid foundation.
Told that this accident is a result of the laissez-faire attitude present in the highest ranks of government which has now trickled down the scale, Abela said appealed to not politicise the situation as this is a serious predicament.
“My priority is that a situation as tragic as this will not happen again.”
