The Radisson Blu Resort Hotel has cancelled a weekend event that was supposed to take place within the premises due to what party organisers said is an increase in media pressure after a Covid-19 positive case was found to have attended another weekend event hosted at the hotel.

On Thursday, a new Covid-19 patient was reported and it was later revealed that he attended a weekend-long party at Radisson Blu Resort Hotel in St. Julian’s last weekend.

Sources told The Malta Independent that the person's roommates had tested negative for the virus, as had most of the attendees and all of the Radisson staff.

However, on Friday, 6 new Covid-19 cases were reported, all related to the party in question.

Needless to say, this situation spread like wildfire on social media with both the event and the hotel facing a lot of backlash from the public despite having followed all the required protocols.

The hotel was meant to host another similar event over the course of this weekend; however the organisers of the said event announced on their social media pages that the hotel owners had informed them that, in light of the news of the past two days, they were unsure about being able to hold the event.

The event was meant to kick off today, and continue for the rest of the weekend.

“The hotel owners have informed us that due to increasing media pressure they are unsure about this event taking place. We’re going update you as soon as we know more. Unfortunately this is now out of our hands,” the first post made by the organisers read.

Soon after, the organisers confirmed that the event at the hotel has been cancelled.

“It is a kick in the face considering all the safety measures me put into place and we are just a 300 pax party (when huge events still taking place) but it is what it is,” they said.

Attendees are still being allowed to stay at the hotel for the weekend; however, all the events have had to be cancelled.

The Radisson Blu Hotel St. Julian's management said in a statement later on Friday that they had cancelled parties meant to take place on Friday and Saturday at the hotel out of "an abundance of caution".

"The Radisson Blu Resort St. Julian’s, out of an abundance of caution, has decided to cancel parties due to take place at the hotel tonight and tomorrow night. The parties were to be organized and hosted by third party specialists in the field, and the hotel was to serve as the venue under hire", the hotel said.

"The hotel’s management continues to place the health and safety of guests and staff alike foremost in any consideration, and continues to abide stringently to all health protocols including a focus on enhanced cleaning, PPE and other regulations as directed by the local authorities."

"The hotel’s protocols have again been audited by the local authorities, as recently as this morning. Notwithstanding that everything was found to be in order, the hotel’s management has decided to err on the side of caution and cancel this weekend’s bookings for the gatherings that were due to take place on its grounds. The Hotel remains in operation", they concluded.
