Sunday, 26 July 2020, 10:11 Last update: about 5 years ago

Two boats carrying a total of 140 migrants fleeing from Libya are in Malta's Search and Rescue (SAR) zone, NGO Alarm Phone tweeted.

In a tweet at 1.45am last night, the NGO said "95 people are at risk of drowning in the Maltese SAR zone! The people reached out to #AlarmPhone as their engine is not working and water is entering the boat. The situation on board is critical. Maltese & Italian authorities are informed but not responding. Rescue now!"

But this is not the only situation that was reported.

It was followed up by another tweet at 2.30am. "A second boat with 45 people fleeing Libya reached out to #AlarmPhone tonight. They are in the Maltese Search and Rescue zone and are urgently asking for help. Once more, the authorities are informed but do not respond. @Armed_Forces_MT, rescue is needed immediately! #DontLetThemDrown!"
