Instead of a place of reform, prison is a place of fear – Beppe Fenech Adami

The Corradino Correctional Facility (CCF) is a place of fear and death, instead of being a place of reform, PN MP and Spokesperson for National Security and the Fight against Criminality Beppe Fenech Adami said in a statement.

He was reacting to the recent death of a Maltese inmate who was awaiting extradition to the US on charges of sexual abuse, yesterday evening.

Nazzareno Mifsud, 57, was awaiting a court decision on an extradition request from the US after facing charges of having molested two boys and was on the wanted list since 1987.

Prison officers administered first aid but Mifsud died in hospital soon after. The cause of death is not yet known.

"This is the tenth person to be found dead in prison over the span of a few months. This death could have been avoided if Malta's prison had the required systems and protocols to protect a person's life, regardless of who they are or what they have done," Fenech Adami stated.

He said that despite the praise the Labour government receives, instead of a prison that is a place of reform, the CCF is a place dominated by fear where lives are being lost.

"Law Enforcement Minster Bryon Camilleri is responsible for this and he is the one who has to provide the answers instead of hiding behind the inquiries and statements. He should assure the Maltese people that this situation of ongoing deaths will be addressed once and for all. If Byron Camillleri is unable to give this insurance, then he has no other road but to resign," he concluded.
