Wednesday, 7 October 2020, 14:30 Last update: about 5 years ago

Opposition Leader Bernard Grech will see that disciplinary action will be used against those within the party who misuse social media.

Bernard Grech, who took his oath to such a position earlier today, was answering question by the press

On Tuesday, issues between PN MP Jason Azzopardi and PN MP Adrian Delia remained apparent. Jason Azzopardi had questioned why Prime Minister Robert Abela did not want to meet Grech at Castille when, Azzopardi Abela had held meetings with Delia at his office. Delia then replied, telling Azzopardi that if he is trying to create fiction between him and Grech, then he will fail. "Everyone is seeing the damage you are causing to the Nationalist Party. Stop your inventions and lies. And if you want scrutiny, start with your good self".

The two have been at loggerheads for many months.

Grech was asked about this situation, and how he will get the two MPs to reconcile.

In response, Grech spoke of the importance that anyone who uses social media does so with respect and intelligently. "We must remember that at the end of the day, what we say publicly, and even privately, can cause people harm. I will follow the President's advice so that whoever fails in some way, there would be the necessary guidelines to follow and if we do not find a solution, then even disciplinary action. I will not let anybody use their position to attack or defend themselves by attacking back."

Told that the question was on the reconciliation between Jason Azzopardi and Adrian Delia and not on the use of social media by MPs, he was again asked what he will do to reconcile them. Grech said that he will continue working for everyone to understand that at the end of the day, "we are one party, we are all members of the same party, MPs of the same party and under my guidance I will ensure that we move ahead as a single family."

Asked about his discussions with Adrian Delia on the latter's future role in the party, and what he will do regarding the fragmented party, he said: "It is undoubtedly important that we have a single Opposition. I insisted, from the beginning, that we need a united and renewed Opposition and one that has good policies and convinces people to trust it while being credible."

He said that in order for this to happen, he will ensure that every member will work, produce, keep in contact with people regularly and ensure that through their work they will do all necessary so that as a single group "we will grow our credibility and for the people to see us as an alternative government."

Asked about the recent resignations within the party, he said that some did resign and some returned their membership cards. "I want to say that while this does not solve anything, I must also say that there were over 100 new paid-up members since Sunday, meaning that the party's regeneration already began. Having said that, it worries and hurts me when thinking about every person who leaves the party or does not feel comfortable. I began the process of speaking with these people to convince them that I am feeling their pain and that together we can work for the good of the party and country."

Asked when he will announce his shadow cabinet, he said he will speak with all his MPs. He will ask for a brief of the work they are doing, what they want to do and what they produced till now, and his decision would be based on his plans. "From my analysis, there are a good number of MPs doing a lot of work and all I decide will regard all this in practice."

He described his appointment as Opposition Leader as an honour, and spoke of doing better politics with respect.
