111 new Covid-19 cases were found overnight in what is a record single-day increase of cases since the pandemic began.

The previous record high was 106 cases, reported on 16 September.  Cases have been consistently high in recent days, with the record numbers contributing to yet another spike in cases of the virus.

52 new recoveries were also found in the last 24 hours, meaning that the current number of active cases has increased to 940 – which remains a record high.  The record number of active cases has increased for the last five days.

Meanwhile, the number of active cases is now practically double what it stood at 10 days ago, when the number of active cases was 473.

The total number of cases has now surpassed the 4,000 mark.

2,761 swab tests were carried out in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of swab tests up to 287,113.

Authorities said that today’s cases are still being investigated but gave details on the cases reported on Tuesday.

Out of the 95 reported on Tuesday, 30 were family members of previously known cases, 6 were contacts of positive work colleagues, and 1 case was from Paceville.

Malta has now had 4,048 cases of the virus.  3,064 out of those have recovered and 44 have died.
