Watch - Was it a goal or not? Power outage hits as penalty taken

Sunday, 29 November 2020, 07:31 Last update: about 4 years ago

Saturday night's power cut came the moment a Marsa player had just taken a penalty against St Andrew's in the First Division League, as can be seen in the footage.

The ball had just been hit and one can see the goalkeeper diving in the right direction. But was it a goal or not?

In a statement on its website, the Malta Football Association did not give an answer.

The power cut which hit several parts of Malta this evening disrupted a number of matches from the National Leagues but only one game, the BOV Challenge League match between St Andrews and Marsa at the Centenary Stadium, was abandoned, the MFA said in a statement.

In accordance with the competition rules, the match will resume at a later date from the 62nd minute, the point in time when referee Matthew Degabriele abandoned the match due to the power outage. In exceptional circumstances like these and in accordance with the Laws of the Game, the decision on the abandonement of a match lies with the referee.

Marsa were leading 2-0 at that point.

The BOV Premier League match between Santa Lucia and Gżira United, at the National Stadium, stopped but resumed when the electricity was restored and after both teams concluded the needed warm-up.

The other BOV Premier League match which kicked off at 18.15, between Sliema Wanderers and Lija Athletic at the Hibernians Stadium, continued uninterrupted.

The three BOV National Amateur League matches – Mdina Knights-Żabbar St Patick at the Luxol Stadium, Attard-Melita at the Sirens Stadium and Mellieħa-Għargħur at the Victor Tedesco Stadium – were completed in time before the power outage, the MFA said.
