Miriam Pace’s family again calls for public inquiry after construction sector report findings

Monday, 25 January 2021, 13:26 Last update: about 5 years ago

The report drawn up by a panel of experts on the construction industry has confirmed the belief held by Miriam Pace’s family that a public inquiry should be launched.

The report was tabled in Parliament last week by Prime Minister Robert Abela. The panel of experts was appointed by the Prime Minister to evaluate the construction sector in Malta and assess any possible reforms required to further improve it. Abela had formed the committee soon after Miriam Pace's death on 2 March, 2020. She had died after her Hamrun home collapsed. Excavation work was being carried out in an adjacent plot.

Among other things, the report found that a particular practice used within the industry is 'nothing short of playing Russian roulette with the lives of third parties'.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the family said that while the publication of the report on the construction sector is a step in the right direction, “the report confirms that the institutions failed in their obligations to safeguard the lives of third parties.”

“That is why the publication of this report confirms the family’s belief that a public inquiry should be launched right away.” The family said that this request was made in the past, but until now no response was given.

The Pace family also took note of the Parliamentary motion for the initiation of a public inquiry and said that it should be discussed without delay so that the family would understand the reasons as to why the request for such an inquiry is being ignored. The motion had been presented by the Opposition.
