The Malta Kite Festival was originally launched by the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society in 2017 together with the China Cultural Centre in Malta. This year, the Valletta Cultural Agency also joined this collaboration by including it in the Valletta Green Festival as a visual kite-making workshop, which was held on 8 May.

The workshop was open to the public and tailored so that children accompanied by an adult may participate with ease. An expert in research and production of kite handicrafts, Guo Hong Li, was invited to guide participants to build their very own string kite. The kite master taught participants through Zoom all the way from his studio in the Chinese city of Weifang, which enjoys an unparalleled reputation as "the Cradle of Kites" and "Kite Capital of the World".

The participants were mostly enthusiastic children and parents or guardians working together as a team to build and design their own kite within approximately one hour using materials prepared beforehand such as bamboo, kite paper and string. Once the workshop ended, all that was left was to venture outside for a family outing and fly their kites with great satisfaction.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, founder and chair of the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, opened the event with a speech to commemorate the occasion and encouraged children to not only learn how to build a kite, but also to open their eyes to the history and Chinese cultural roots of kite-making.
