The police dished out hundreds of fines last week, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said, when asked about illegal gatherings taking place in the Sliema area.

Residents have complained about beach parties that last until the early hours of the morning.

They say these illegal gatherings – banned under Covid-rules – have been taking place up to five times a week.

Asked about this on Wednesday, Camilleri said the police have been carrying out inspections all over the country, including in places where abuse can take place. They are often accompanied by LESA officials.

He said that last weekend, the police issued hundreds of fines. He said he does not like seeing people get fines but those who break the law have to face the consequences.

The authorities said Tuesday that 755 fines had been issued over the previous week, with 176 fines issued for public gathering breaches and 540 fines related to facemasks.
