The Nationalist Party has promised to hold a referendum on the Gozo tunnel, purchase two new ferries, and expand Mgarr harbour if it is elected into government.

In a press conference on Wednesday, the PN said that it will invest in increased connectivity between Malta and Gozo through the purchase of two new ferries – one of which will be reserve exclusively for cargo so that industry and manufacturing in Gozo can be given a push.

Party chief spokesperson Peter Agius and Gozitan MPs Kevin Cutajar and Joseph Ellis addressed the press conference.

Agius said that the PN was ready to take the next step in order to increase the fleet available to connect Malta to Gozo in order to address the need for a better service for cargo.

Ellis meanwhile said that substantial investment will be made in order for the Mgarr harbour to grow so that more services can be offered to the Gozitan island.

Cutajar said that the PN would allow Gozitans to choose whether or not a tunnel between Malta and Gozo should be built, noting how the step to build a tunnel is a decisive and irreversible one.

He said that the PN will permit every Gozitan to have the right and possibility to form their own opinion, knowing the advantages and disadvantages of the project, and to then vote in a referendum on the tunnel.

“This is the only way that Gozo can take this critical step with conviction for the current and future generations,” he said before also stating that a PN government would also consider connections for Gozo through air voyages.
