Couple keeps Maltese culinary delicacies alive in Toronto

A Maltese couple has kept Maltese culinary delicacies alive in Toronto for the past 40 years, the Toronto Star reports.

Antoinette and Charlie Buttigieg run the Malta Bake Shop, “a small but mighty presence” in the Little Malta neighbourhood in this Canadian city.

The shop has been running in some capacity since 1919, and is now famous not only for pastizzi, but also for other Maltese traditional food such as honey-rings, timpana and the unmistakeable ftira.

“For us, our customers are like the family that we left back home and never had,” Antoinette says.
