Prof Richard Muscat becomes first ever Maltese elected to International Narcotics Control Board

Prof. Richard Muscat has been elected to the International Narcotics Control Board.

The first ever Maltese expert elected to this Board, he will be serving as member of the board until 2025.

With decades of experience as a neuroscientist with a particular interest in how drugs affect brain function, an academic and a national advisor on drug policies, Professor Muscat has played an active role in shaping national, EU and regional drug policy.  Prof Muscat currently chairs the newly instituted International Drug Policy Academy set up by the Pompidou Group of the Council of Europe. Since 1995, Prof. Muscat also sits on the Management Board of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) is an independent, quasi-judicial expert body established by the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It is made up of 13 international experts in the medical, pharmacological or pharmaceutical fields.

In a statement, the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs conveyed the Government's appreciation for the support extended by the countries currently serving on ECOSOC and which made the election of Professor Muscat possible to this auspicious position.
