Two departments at Mater Dei Hospital will be named after Albert Fenech and Victor Calvagna, two giants of the medical profession who recently passed away.

The news was announced by Health Minister Chris Fearne in Parliament on Monday.

The Cardiology Department will be named after Albert Fenech, who was Malta’s foremost cardiologist.

He had helped establish the department in 1995, and worked there until 2015.  He served as a PN MP between 2013 and 2016 before resigning in order to seek private employment abroad.

He passed away aged 70 on 28 December 2021.

Mater Dei’s Children’s Department meanwhile will be named after Victor Calvagna.

Calvagna, a well-known oncologist and president and founder of Puttinu Cares, was critically injured after being hit by a car while he was out running in Qawra.  He succumbed to his injuries on 4 January.  He was 63 years old.

Countless tributes remembered him as a man who had saved many, and who had “enough humanity for a nation.”

Mater Dei’s Orthopaedics Department will be named after specialist Charles Grixti and the Zabbar Health Centre will be named after Anglu Psaila.
