Two youths arrested in Santa Venera drug find, two police officers injured

Two young men were arrested over a drug find on Sunday, in an incident during which two police officers were injured.

The police said they were notified about two individuals acting suspiciously in Triq Notabile, where they jumped over a fence surrounding a convent.

Members of the Rapid Intervention Unit and district police went to the scene, at which time the men tried to escape in a car.

The vehicle wss stopped in Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp, Santa Venera, where a search yielded suspected cocaine and heroin, as well as a knife. The police said the drugs were prepared for trafficking.

The men were at this point told they were under arrest. One of them resisted, injuring two officers, one of them slightly and the other grievously.

The youths, aged 18 and 20, both from Qormi, were then led to the Birkirkara police station. One of them was found to be carrying more drugs. 

Magistrate Natasha Galea Sciberras is leading an inquiry. Police investigations are ongoing.
