While its home undergoes refurbishment, Teatru Salesjan is delighted to present a rich Spring programme in a multitude of exciting venues throughout Malta, scattering a feast of cultural delights across the island!
First off the line is the international dance sensation, imPerfect Dancers Company, who bring to our shores a thrilling new work of contemporary dance, Empty Floor, inspired by a desire to explore the concealed and private universe of people affected by Alzheimer's disease. The power of this performance lies in its exploration of the various aspects of this debilitating disease, from the painful to the downright funny. Through embarrassment and discomfort, we are invited to uncover the strength and joy that anchor us to life. What makes Empty Floor unique is the active involvement of senior citizens in the performance: audience members are given the chance to share the stage with the dancers themselves, thus becoming an integral part of the show they are watching.
After this, Teatru Salesjan presents Il-Vjaġġ tar-Raġġ, a magical Easter show for all the family, set in the heart of Għajn Tuffieħa's rural landscape. In a non-verbal, sensory-friendly performance, we embark on a fantastical journey of discovery and self-knowledge in the story of a ray of light who escapes from the sun to travel the globe. Far away from home, she stumbles into a magical new world tucked away among the trees, and encounters some of the marvelous creatures who live there. Il-Vjaġġ tar-Raġġ is a site-specific visual performance for children and adults alike. Created and directed by Abigail Agius, Il-Vjaġġ tar-Raġġ is performed by Zoe Camilleri and Jacob Piccinino, with props and puppets by Matthew Pandolfino. Definitely a show not to be missed!
In the final installment of its Spring season, Teatru Salesjan - in collaboration with Palazzo Parisio - presents three sparkling performances set in the beautiful surroundings of Palazzo Parisio.
In the first of these, the Jose Carlos Gòmez Quartet performs the premiere of their new show, Light & Gold, an evocative evening of Spanish music and tapas, glowing with the exotic aura of the Iberian landscape.
This is followed by Burnand and Sullivan's scintillating operetta Cox & Box, a hilarious and deliciously absurd Victorian farce that lampoons the double-dealing and fraud that comes with renting an apartment in a big city. Performed by an international cast of singers and actors, Cox & Box is operatic farce at its funniest.
The Palazzo programme ends with the Maltese premiere of Tama Matheson's acclaimed music-drama, Johann Sebastian - The Life and Passions of JS Bach - a dramatic retelling of the extraordinary life of the world's greatest musician. Interlaced throughout with Bach's incomparable music, Johann Sebastian is a performance half-concert, half-drama, set in the dazzlingly opulent ballroom of the Palazzo Parisio.
With regard to Teatru Salesjan's Spring Season, Artistic Consultant, Rosetta Debattista, has commented: "Teatru Salesjan, like theatres all over the globe, is emerging from such a challenging period and now looking forward to the completion of the works being carried out at the theatre. Notwithstanding all, this period has taught us so much in terms of building bridges, finding new ways of reaching the public. With exciting collaborations with Palazzo Parisio, VCT, Mgarr Council and others, Teatru Salesjan will continue to bring the arts to people all over Malta."
