The annual illumination of Saint Nicholas square in Siggiewi returns after a 2 year absence.

As the evening sun sets ushering in the night of Maundy Thursday, the village core of Siggiewi is magically transformed with a mystical torch fire atmosphere. Organised by Grupp tal-Armar 6 ta' Dicembru in collaboration with the Siggiewi Local Council, the stunning spectacle has strongly developed into an iconic Holy Week tradition sought by pilgrims during this period. For over 15 years, the 'fjakkolata' has been a hallmark event inspiring thousands as the Maltese islands wind down into a sober state of reflection.

This year's much awaited edition is set to mark a grand comeback after being postponed twice during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Over 1800 fire torches will be meticulously placed around the square and the parish church parvis forming a truly incredible artistic design which will be revealed on the day of the event.

Preparations for the event are now well into their final stages. Nonetheless, the shimmering lights are the fruit of year long planning, design and work by volunteers. All of the 1800+ fire-torches are produced individually, by hand and require hundreds of hours and dedication.

Two exhibitions in the prominent chapels of the main square will be complementing the illumination. St. John's chapel will be hosting a variety of traditional and contemporary art representing the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ featuring works by local artists Jennings Falzon and Antonio Mifsud amongst others. A miniature Via Crucis is on display at the Saint Mary (Ta' Cwerra) chapel.

The Siggiewi parish church will be open till late for prayer and adoration of the blessed sepulcre. The nearby Laferla Cross will also be illuminated with fire torches by the Saint Nicholas Band Club.
