Nationalist Party MEP David Casa has said that the deal struck between Malta to Azerbaijan in 2014 is vastly different to that which the EU has struck with the autocratic nation this week.

When asked for his reaction on the partnership signed between the EU and Azerbaijan, Casa stated that throughout the process all the international media was invited, the agreements were transparent and there was no link to corruption.

“There is a stark difference between the corrupt agreement made between Malta and Azerbaijan and that made with Europe. There were no hidden agreements and the process was transparent at all times”, Casa said.

This differs greatly to what ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said when he stated that Malta was the leading country in the EU to look to places such as Azerbaijan for alternative sources of energy.

The news of this deal was welcomed greatly by those involved in the Labour Party stating that it was their government who had paved the way for the new direction without mentioning Muscat.

Labour Deputy Leader Daniel Micallef was one of those and praised the deal for keeping the same price even after a pandemic and throughout the Russia-Ukraine war.

“The rising prices are felt by everyone and having the lowest inflation rate in Europe is no coincidence but it is the consolidation we should rely on,” Micallef said on social media.
