There is uncertainty for Gozo Channel workers as the government has confirmed that it wants the privatization of the company, the PN said today.

PN spokesperson for Gozo Alex Borg and PN spokesperson for the Maritime Sector Ivan Castillo said that the monopoly of the Gozo Channel may soon end, as Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that he will issue a public tender, open to all, for the operation of the transport service which is currently being managed by Gozo Channel.

Abela also said that the Gozo Channel concession should have been closed in 2017 and confirmed that the current government company will be putting forward its offer to keep the concession.

The Nationalist Party had revealed in the last few days that there are plans to privatize the company.

The PN said that Abela lied to the Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who was one of the first to deny that there was any thought about the privatization of Gozo Channel.

“All this throws a lot of uncertainty on who uses the Gozo Channel, and its workers,” the PN said.
