Restoration works on the Ghaqba Windmill in Naxxar have been completed, costing around €1.5 million in funding, returning the historic landmark to its original state over 300 years ago.

The project was inaugurated by the local council of Naxxar and attended by Minister for Public Works and Planning Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi as well as Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Chris Bonett.

The Planning Authority financed the restoration project with over €400,000 from the Development Planning Fund, which included the refurbishment of the windmill's machinery, reconstruction, and installation of new sails. The European Regional Development Fund invested €678,000 in the project.

Speaking at the inauguration, Azzopardi emphasized the government's commitment to preserving Malta's cultural and environmental heritage, and to the proper use of public and European funds.

"Conservation of Malta's cultural heritage is a mission for us all, and that's why we are looking forward to more similar projects to continue our commitment in favour of the preservation of cultural and environmental heritage," he added.

Bonett noted that the restored windmill will serve as an attraction for both locals and tourists, with an estimated 3,900 visitors per year.

Naxxar Mayor Anne Marie Muscat Fenech Adami said that the windmill will also serve as a cultural centre for the community.

The restoration project was funded by the Planning Authority, local council schemes, and European funds. The Ghaqba Windmill is now open for public viewing.
