New commanding officer for the Salesian Brigade

Sunday, 7 May 2023, 09:00 Last update: about 4 years ago

The Salesian Brigade is a voluntary organisation for children and young people in uniform which was founded in 1910 and forms part of the Salesian Community of Malta.

Towards mid-February the Brigade celebrated St Sebastian's day, the patron saint of the organisation, which is celebrated every year so that new members are given their uniform. This year's celebration was rather different because the commanding officer Joseph Giorgio resigned from his post. Giorgio had been a member of the Brigade for 71 years and gave over 60 years of service in the ranks of sergeant, sergeant major and captain, until he became commanding officer in 2001. This was a special occasion for the Salesian Brigade and the members attended with enthusiasm to show their appreciation for the valuable work done by Giorgio during his time in the Brigade and the legacy he will leave behind. The salute to Giorgio was a beautiful one which paved the way for Leonard Falzon (Jnr), the new commanding officer.

Falzon has been a member of the brigade since 1969 and as his predecessor he served in different ranks within the Brigade. He was an automatic choice for the Drum Major of the Brigade band because he plays all the instruments that are used in the band. In this position Falzon spent 20 years before being appointed captain in 2008. Falzon is a Gold Award holder of the Presidents' Award Scheme and during his time in the Brigade he successfully achieved many different goals for the organisation. He is considered to be the brain and the hands behind one of the biggest projects carried out during the years by the Brigade and through which this organisation has its headquarters in Għajn Tuffieħa.

We wish the new commanding officer the best of luck and we have no doubt that Falzon will continue to work so that this organisation will grow and continue to lead children and young people on the right path.
