‘No space is free from greed’ FAA says as it urges citizens to join Saturday’s national protest

No space is free from greed, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar said in a statement.

"Tall and dreary blocks of flats in urban centres, towers in congested areas, commercial buildings, villas and swimming pools in the middle of the countryside, construction encroachment on the island of Gozo, and an assault on the natural reserve of Comino. Cranes, dust, dirt and congestion everywhere."

As one of the organising NGOs, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar is urging people to participate in a national environment protest in Valletta on Saturday 27 May. The protest will start at 10.30 am from the Triton Fountain.

This protest is being called "as our quality of life, heritage and natural environment are deteriorating rapidly due to the frenzy of reckless building everywhere."

"We are in this mess for the clear reason that the authorities that are responsible for protecting Malta's natural and heritage assets: The Planning Authority, the Environment Resource Authority (ERA) the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH) and the Lands Authority are in league with developers to create a system that serves the profit of the few instead of the common good."

"In this national protest, we will demand the following immediate actions:  1. to change planning policies re allowing buildings on ODZ, the height and intensity of buildings, the height of hotels, and the scheduling of sites of historic interest and value - in order to stop the wave of construction that does not respect context, heritage, natural environment, farmers and residents; 2. to radically reform all institutions responsible for the environment, planning and lands, so that they start functioning in a serious and transparent manner and independently from politicians and businesses; 3. to build an economic model that seeks a better quality of life for everyone instead of endless economic growth based on the profits of the few."

"This dire situation can only change when people of goodwill denounce it actively. It is no longer enough to be a keyboard warrior, complaining on Facebook, on newspaper blogs or amongst ourselves - it is time to stand up and be counted!"

"Enough is enough - we demand environment and planning reform NOW!"
