The care home Dar San Guzepp in Ghajnsielem is expected to greet its first residents at the beginning of 2024, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri revealed, after this care home has been promised for over a decade.
The project to transform the former youth hostel into Dar San Guzepp was promised by the Gozo Ministry in 2013 and was expected to have 70 rooms and 140 beds. However, due to legal delays it has been abandoned for years.
An Audit Report revealed that since 2013, the government had spent €1 million on the site since it rented it out from the Gozo Curia.
Camilleri responded to a parliamentary question put forward by PN MP Chris Said who asked for a date when the home will be complete and whether the contract has been signed by the preferred bidder. Camilleri said that the contract has not been signed, but it is expected to be signed and announced in the coming weeks.
The home was granted a development permit in 2014 and works began in 2015. Later in 2020, the ministry issued a tender to finish works and manage Dar San Guzepp, but this led to a legal battle between CareMalta who won the tender, and Golden Care Homes who were excluded from the bidding process because they did not meet the debt-ratio requirements, which caused Golden Care Homes to appeal this decision to the Public Contracts Review Board (PCRB)
Care Malta won the €30 million government contract for Dar San Guzepp, in January after the highest court upheld the original decision.
