Government looking to provide more incentives to prioritise natural environment in Gozo

Government is turning its attention towards providing more incentives to direct investments and choices in Gozo that prioritize the preservation of the hearts of villages and the natural environment, it said in a statement.

Government said that this initiative also aims to build on existing projects, such as schemes to encourage property purchases in urban conservation areas.

Prime Minister Robert Abela discussed these plans during a meeting with seven Gozitan organizations, deliberating on proposals under the initiative called "Għal Għawdex".

During the meeting, Abela said that reality of the island has evolved, with Gozo being a vibrant and thriving destination. However, he also emphasized the need to ensure the preservation of what makes Gozo unique.

"We need to initiate new initiatives - initiatives that bring everyone together to ensure Gozo's wellbeing. The upcoming budget will also reflect this commitment," Abela said, referencing the significant project of creating an open space in the heart of Rabat, Gozo.

He encouraged public participation in the ongoing consultation regarding this project, as it is one of the key initiatives that will bring about substantial changes in Gozo, he said.

The project aims to focus on the regeneration of an extensive area of over 22,000 square meters. Government said that a central aspect of this vision is the transformation of the current parking area into an open and accessible space for everyone.

With regard to the Hondoq decision, Abela said the government was consistent against development on this site.

On Tuesday, the court quashed an attempt by the developer behind a mega-project at Hondoq, to get the Planning Authority's refusal for his plans to be overturned.

The meeting was attended by the Gozo Regional Council, Din l-Art Ħelwa Għawdex, Wirt Għawdex, Gozo Business Chamber, Gozo Tourism Association, and the Gozo University Group.
