The restoration of the facade of the Holy Cross Church in Floriana, better known as the tal-Patrijiet Kappuccini, has been completed. 

This restoration work was carried out through funds provided by the Community Malta Agency, (Agenzija Komunita) in cooperation with the Maltese Council for the Arts. 

The restoration of this church, which is over 400 years old, involved the replacement of a fallen or deteriorated stone, the installation of antique lighting, and the conservation of the existing facade stone.

Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri visited the church, where they were met by the provincial of the Capuchin Friars Fr. Ivan Scicluna.

Bonnici said that thanks to the collaborations between Agenzija Komunita and the Maltese Council for the Arts, government continues to strengthen the historical sites present in our cities and villages, which are a source of pride for our communities. 

“This restoration project continues to safeguard these important aspects of our heritage,” he said.

Camilleri expressed his satisfaction that Agenzija Komunita is investing in our country's cultural heritage, in addition to the investments being made in Maltese and Gozitan communities. 

He said that in recent years, the agency has undertaken various projects across our islands, which have contributed to the preservation of the Maltese heritage, including its religious heritage, which holds significant importance for the Maltese people.

“We carried out this project with the Capuchin Friars in their church in Floriana, where not only has the church's appearance been enhanced, but an extensive restoration of its facade has also taken place, Camilleri said, adding that such projects enrich the community.

Meanwhile, the works had commenced during the provincial term of the former Provincial Fr. Effie Mallia, after the church was temporarily closed to the public due to a fallen stone from its facade. 

The Capuchin order sought assistance to address these damages with the help of government agencies and embarked on this restoration project.

Present at the inauguration were also the CEO of Agenzija Komunita Joe Mizzi, and Mayor of Floriana,Vincent Borg. The investment in the restoration totaled €50,000.
