An elderly woman died on Friday evening after she was hit by a coach she had just disembarked, the police said.

The accident took place at 7.20pm in Ħal Far Road, Zurrieq.

The woman, aged 80 from Ghaxaq, was on her way to attend an event being organised by MEP David Casa, who expressed his shock and sorrow in a Facebook post, and cancelled the event.

The woman was certified dead on site.

The Iveco bus, the police said, was being driven by a 52-year-old man of Ghaxaq.

The police said that two other women, aged 64 and 63, both of Tarxien and both of whom were on the same bus, had also been injured.

They were taken to hospital, with one of them suffering grievous injuries.

The driver was unhurt, the police said.

Magistrate Nadine Lia is leading an inquiry.

Minister Byron Camilleri said that his thoughts are with the victim and others who were taken to hospital following the accident.
