Lina Rincon’s ‘Reflections’

Wednesday, 3 April 2024, 09:08 Last update: about 2 years ago

The current show at Christine X Art Gallery in Sliema is with works by the distinguished Norwegian visual London-based artist, Lina Maria Rincon. Her latest collection of paintings which represent a desire for summer and warmth in both weather and people, idealizing her country-of-origin Colombia, will remain on display at the gallery until 25 April.

Preferring to paint spaces without people allowing the viewer to inhabit them, she makes note that these spaces are not real, but idealized paintings of memory together with a longing for a moment of leisure. And whilst the artists she admires most are David Hockey and Matthias Weischer because of their painterly techniques and the loose feeling their paintings evoke, she realizes that whilst Weischer paints personal objects and sometimes people, her personal preferences are idealized spaces with fewer objects. The same would apply to the work of David Hockney when compared to her own, although similarly, David Hockney provides a cohesive frame for the viewer to enter, which she loves because 'they evoke a beautiful world of spring and summer akin to scenes in a movie'.

Rincon has a rich background in painting and ceramics. Over the past decade, she has created works for art shows as well as commissioned pieces for hotels in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Her artistry has garnered the attention of private collectors and has led to the distinction of selling her work to the Norwegian Prime Minister, as well as to renowned cultural institutions in Oslo. Rincon's work has been showcased internationally, with exhibitions in the USA, London, and Norway. This show marks her inaugural exhibition in Malta.

The exhibition promises to transport viewers to the vibrant landscapes of South American summers in Colombia where she was born. She wants her work to be that window into another world that viewers long for- where peace and wellness, memories and belonging are felt. Christine X Art Gallery invites art enthusiasts, connoisseurs, and the public alike to join in and experience the rich tapestry of Lina Maria Rincon's artistic vision up until 25 April from Monday to Saturday 10am-1pm, 4-7pm (free entrance). The exhibition of works the artist describes as "pop art meets architectural landscapes" promises to be a visual feast, offering a unique blend of cultural influences and a compelling narrative that resonates with the universal theme of belonging.
