NGO Repubblika said that the inaction seen by the Speaker of the House over unanswered parliamentary questions is a "threat to democracy."

In a statement on Wednesday, Repubblika expressed its concern about the serious situation developing in the Maltese Parliament.

"We believe that the position taken by the Speaker, where he does nothing when government ministers do not answer parliamentary questions, is a threat to democracy," it said.

Repubblika said that in a parliamentary democracy, the government must be accountable to Parliament.

"Therefore, the position of Speaker Anġlu Farrugia does not make sense and is allowing the government's insult of not holding itself accountable to continue," it said.

Repubblika said it expected the Prime Minister to ensure that his ministers provide all the information requested by the people's representatives in Parliament.

"We also expect the Speaker to stop the arrogance of Ministers who think they are not accountable for their actions," Repubblika said.
