Nestlé Malta has embarked on an educational campaign to raise awareness on the benefits of natural mineral water. The initiative being carried out in collaboration with certified nutritionist Fleur Bugeja, aims to educate the public on the purity and health benefits of natural mineral water, with a particular emphasis on Levissima water.

As the Maltese summer intensifies, staying hydrated becomes crucial. Despite at first glance both seem identical, table water and natural mineral water have distinct characteristics. According to the European Commission, natural mineral waters are distinguished from ordinary drinking water by their purity at the source, constant level of minerals, and the fact that they are bottled directly at the source without the need for extensive treatment. In contrast, table water in Malta undergoes significant purification processes to meet drinking standards.

Natural mineral water, such as Levissima, naturally contains essential minerals and trace elements like calcium, magnesium, bicarbonates and fluorine. These oligoelements are vital for various biochemical reactions and physiological processes within the body. Research indicates that natural mineral water can enhance digestion, nutrient absorption and has diuretic effects due to its bicarbonate content, which aids in the excretion of uric acid.

Levissima water originates from the pristine environment of Valtellina, nestled in the Central Alps at the western edge of the Stelvio Natural Park. This natural mineral water is renowned for its purity and is bottled at the source to maintain its inherent qualities. Known for its lightness, as implied by its name derived from the Latin word levis, Levissima is an oligomineral water with a fixed residue of 88.3mg/L at 180°C.

Compared to local table water, Levissima has lower sodium levels (2.1mg/L versus 5mg/L in table water), higher calcium levels (23.1mg/L versus 5mg/L) and lower chlorine levels (0.3mg/L versus 5mg/L). This makes Levissima ideal for individuals on low sodium diets and for the preparation of infant food.
