Josette Fenech and Joanne Mizzi, two well-established Maltese artists, have been selected to participate in the prestigious Stati d'Arte exhibition held at Villa Fidelia in Spello, Italy. This international contemporary art exhibition, which opened on 4 August and runs until 8 September, showcases the works of 70 innovative artists from around the world. The exhibition, curated by the Association La Casa degli Artisti, Andrea Baffoni, directed by Carla Medici and Francesco Minelli with the support of Gabriella Juganariu, is celebrated for its emphasis on dialogue and encounter, providing a platform for artists to engage in a meaningful exchange of ideas and perspectives.

A digital and interactive experience

This year's edition of Stati d'Arte, subtitled Mondi lontani (Distant worlds), is part of the national celebrations marking 700 years since the death of Marco Polo. The exhibition explores themes of otherness and the encounters experienced during various journeys, with a particular focus on social transformations and the integration of new technologies.

The exhibition is described by Baffoni as "not just an exhibition, but an aesthetic experience - a journey through the rooms of imagination". This immersive approach is evident in the numerous interactive installations that allow visitors to engage directly with the artworks. The exhibition aims to transcend traditional art presentations by offering a space where creativity and imagination can flourish, creating an environment that contrasts with the pessimism and fear often found in a contemporary society.

Villa Fidelia, the historic venue for Stati d'Arte, has recently undergone significant renovations and digitalisation efforts by the Province of Perugia. Erika Borghesi, the delegated councillor representing the Province, expressed pride in hosting the exhibition in such a beautifully refurbished space.

A platform for Maltese Art

For Josette and Joanne, participating in Stati d'Arte represents a significant milestone in their artistic careers. Their selection is a testament to their talent and their ability to resonate with the exhibition's theme of dialogue and encounter. Both artists are known for their innovative approaches and their works are expected to contribute significantly to the overall narrative of the exhibition.

Fenech's and Mizzi's participation in Stati d'Arte also highlights their artistic talent on an international stage. Their works are characterised by a unique blend of traditional influences and modern techniques while pushing the boundaries of contemporary art.

The opening ceremony of Stati d'Arte was attended by notable figures, including the ambassador of Ankara to Rome, Ömer Gücük, marking Turkey's first participation in the exhibition. This international involvement underscores the inclusive nature of the event, which aims to foster cross-cultural dialogue and showcase diverse artistic expressions from around the world.

Stati d'Arte 2024 at Villa Fidelia is more than just an art exhibition; it is a celebration of creativity, cultural exchange, and the transformative power of art. For Josette, Joanne and the other artists, it is a platform to showcase their work and to engage in a global conversation through their art.

Josette added this message to her perspective on art: "Colours from the northern coast of my island home and the vibrant wildflowers in the fields inspire my abstract art, reflecting a kaleidoscope of emotions with a message of hope and light. What began as a chance hobby 20 years ago has become my refuge from daily stresses, taking me on a journey across Europe and into private collections in Malta and abroad. Art is personal, and I invite you to join me on this journey of colour and emotion."

Furthermore Joanne added: "In these artworks, I depicted deep human connections that nowadays are being transposed more and more into digital interactions. The first piece shows a man and pregnant woman embracing intimately, symbolising unity and protection, with the man's hands tenderly holding his partner and their unborn child. The second artwork captures the subtlety of intimacy, depicting only the arms of a man and woman, with a delicate touch conveying profound love and connection. The third piece portrays a couple standing face-to-face, their hands interlocked behind the woman's back, illustrating deep trust and an emotional bond through their harmonious and symmetrical forms. Art for me is the unyielding passion that fuels my spirit. Within this realm, I discover a gateway to explore the depths of my inner world."
