Ultra-endurance athlete Neil Agius posted a video message the morning after he set a new world-record for swimming around the Maltese islands in 60 hours, 30 minutes, saying that he felt “super happy” with how everything happened.

Agius ended his record-breaking swim in Ghar Lapsi on Monday night, having covered a staggering 140 kilometres or so around the Maltese islands, while being accompanied by his support team.

In a video message on Tuesday morning, Agius said that he has always said that ultra open water swimming is “full gangster,” and his swim “surely lived up to the name.”

“I am super happy with everything that happened, with the way the team came together to help me stay in the water and navigate those crazy conditions for as long as possible,” Agius said, thanking his team.

He said he did his own navigation in the sea, but his support team were navigating him “through a storm,” and that he was super proud of them.

Agius said he is awaiting the final confirmation on the distance he achieved, which should be in the region of 142 or 144 kilometres, with the ratification process by the World Open Water Swimming Association underway.

After his long swim, Agius said he spent the night “weeping in pain,” as he could barely move, and he could not swallow due to the ulcers he developed in his mouth.

However, Agius said did not feel so bad the next morning, aside from his inflamed lips, with him joking that it appeared as if he had undergone a botox procedure.

“Thank you for all the amazing messages, I will get back to all of them slowly,” Agius said.

He told viewers to keep watching his space for “some really exciting stuff coming up,” adding that while he will not be swimming again anytime soon, the journey of community is “just beginning.”
