200 years of Beethoven’s Ninth

Sunday, 27 October 2024, 08:15 Last update: about 18 days ago

To mark the 200th anniversary of its debut performance, resident conductor Michael Laus will lead the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, joined by members of the Malta Youth Orchestra, in Beethoven's iconic Symphony No. 9. As the composer's final symphony, it was revolutionary for incorporating vocal soloists and a chorus - an unprecedented innovation in the symphonic tradition.

The choral section, inspired by Friedrich Schiller's Ode to Joy, expresses a message of universal brotherhood and happiness. Accompanying the orchestra are internationally renowned soloists namely soprano Elisabeth Breuer, mezzo-soprano Theresa Kronthaler, tenor Patrick Reiter and bass Modestas Sedlevicius, along with The New Choral Singers and the Goldberg Ensemble.
