ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born and raised in Malta, Sylvana embarked on her ceramics journey 35 years ago. Her initial training was under the guidance of professional ceramist Anna Ciavola, whose expertise provided her with a solid foundation.

Moving from wheel throwing to hand building at Julie Apap's Studio represented a significant shift in her ceramic artistry. This transition opened up new possibilities for texture, form and design allowing her to craft unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect her artistic vision.

Since retiring three years ago, Sylvana has embraced ceramics as a full-time pursuit, dedicating her days to crafting and experimenting at Space for Clay. This collaborative environment, along with the unwavering support of Rosella, has been instrumental in her creative development.

Her work is characterized by a contemporary style, focusing on wall hangings and vases. She draws inspiration from a variety of artists, yet it is the art of glazing that truly captivates her. This passion for glazing is evident in the vibrant and dynamic surfaces of her pieces.

Throughout her career, Sylvana has participated in three joint exhibitions, sharing her work with a wider audience. Her upcoming solo exhibition will feature 40 pieces, each reflecting her dedication to the craft and her desire to connect with others through art.

Her goal for this exhibition is not only to showcase her work but also to foster a sense of community among artists and friends. She hopes that visitors will find joy and inspiration in her pieces and that some may even be inspired to start their own journey in pottery.
