The police booked more than 400 drivers in the last 10 days of the year, stopping 4,700 vehicles in 170 road checks, the police said in a statement Wednesday.
The police hold regular road checks but these are increased at this time of the year in a bid to make the roads safer.
The majority of drivers stopped were in conformity with the law, the police said, but more than 400 were booked because no road licence was affixed to the windscreen, seat belt infringements and use of mobile phones while driving.
Another 85 contraventions were issued for over-speeding, while 11 drivers failed the breathalyser tests.
The police also distributed leaflets with educational information.
A spokesman for the police said that these inspections were coordinated with the assistance of Transport Malta officers.
