Peter Seychell's latest collection of paintings will be presented in a solo exhibition titled, Wastelands, at The Phoenicia Malta. Running throughout February, this exhibition offers viewers an immersive exploration of the complex relationship between humanity and the natural world.

A fresh yet compelling presence on the local art scene, Peter Seychell embodies a remarkable combination of dedication to his art and boundless creativity. Self-taught and driven by an insatiable curiosity, Seychell's artistic output has been both prolific and profound. Over the past five years, his work has proven to be eclectic in style yet consistent in mood, and definitely authentic. Each piece offers not only a personal catharsis for the artist but also an invitation to a shared, dynamic dialogue with viewers. His journey - from a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry to a flourishing artistic practice - is a testament to the transformative power of creativity at any stage of life.

Seychell's career as an artist officially began in 2022 with a joint exhibition Nuances, curated by Joseph Agius and held at Gemelli Gallery. Since then, he has presented two solo exhibitions: Baħħ in 2023, curated by the late Mark Mallia, and Room for Speculation in 2024, curated by Melanie Erixon. Each of these shows demonstrated his evolving style and increasing confidence in addressing urgent themes such as environmental degradation.

In Wastelands Seychell continues this exploration with a wintry collection of works that reflect both the fragility and resilience of nature. His signature portrayal of surreal, dreamlike, textured landscapes devoid of human presence emphasises humanity's impact on the environment while evoking a haunting beauty. Seychell's statement "We inherited the great outdoors; we leave behind us the onset of wastelands", encapsulates the ethos of this exhibition.

Seychell's exploration continues also to the various media he's presenting in this exhibition: from inks, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, and pencil to innovative techniques such as ink and fire on paper, is evident throughout this collection. Forests, twigs, trees, and shrubs, often executed in a monochrome or limited palette, provide the backdrop to these mysterious scenes. His works demonstrate versatility as well as an ability to adapt and push boundaries, creating pieces that range from delicate and detailed to bold and abstract. Notable examples include:

• "Powder Dump" showcases Seychell's ability to find beauty in desolation;
• "A River Still" which is a powerful pencil and charcoal piece exemplifying Seychell's technical skill;
• "Bathed in Moonlight" that demonstrates his expertise in ink on paper;
• "Biting Blues" that offers a dark, atmospheric piece contributing to the chilling winter theme;
• and "Getting By": a hopeful piece with light tones and an uplifting palette of blues and oranges.

Trees, both bare and intricate, often dominate his compositions. From the detailed "Migration" and "木\u6漏れ日 komorebi" to freer, more abstract landscapes, Seychell's works offer a nuanced depiction of nature's vulnerability and strength. His signature style - featuring intertwined twigs playfully set against the foreground - provides a unifying motif throughout the collection.

The evocative and multifaceted Wastelands collection is perfectly suited to the month of February, with its themes of reflection and renewal.
