Joseph G. Borg and Tessie, are two Maltese artists, husband and wife, are presenting their second joint art exhibition "Harmony in Contrast" which emerged from the discussions and observations of how they approach their artwork. Interesting how their beliefs, attitudes and energies differ while creating their paintings. One profound aspect is their perception of art.
Joseph's work is based on discipline and adherence to rules, aiming for technical correctness. In this exhibition, Joseph's emotions guide him to focus on preserving his childhood memories, filled with chores and playfulness. His paintings exude nostalgia and romanticism, offering a sentimental journey through his past.
In contrast, Tessie prefers to paint her innermost thoughts and feelings, her frustrations, and her perceptions of reality. Symbolism, spirituality, and spontaneity are the key elements of her work. For her, Art represents total freedom, allowing for uninhibited expression and creative exploration.
Joseph G. Borg has been interested in Art from a very young age, painting 'still life', portraiture of his family, siblings, and school mates. His childhood environment also made an impact on Joseph, where poverty and helping the underdog was a reality for him. His solo exhibition, in 2019 "My Childhood Roots" is a reliving of Joseph G. Borg experience - a testimony of what life was like when he was young. He was influenced by the late Joseph Borg Xuereb, his primary school teacher. He continued his studies at the Malta School of Art in Valletta and took part in various collective exhibitions and his work is found in private collections at home and abroad. In 2017 Joseph represented Malta during UNESCO Malta Art Camp.
Tessie has always been interested in art, colour and psychology for their symbolism and their spiritual dimension which she describes as her 'growth' companion in life. Her work is connected to her inward search for meaning, and colour is an essential part of how she experiences the world around her. Tessie enjoys exploring landscapes, abstract art and painting her personal reflections. Her preference is towards bright, vibrant colours and textures using acrylic paint and found objects. She studied art at the School of Art Valletta, and she furthered her studies as a mature student at MCAST obtaining B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art. She took part in various collective exhibitions and her work is found in private collections locally. In 2017 Tessie represented Malta during UNESCO Art Camp Malta.
Despite their contrasting approaches, there is harmony in their differences. Harmony, for them, means respecting their unique personalities and styles, encouraging each other, and exploring the themes behind their paintings. This positive communication allows their work, though executed differently, to be appreciated in its entity.
