Born in 1966, Josanne has been immersed in the art world for as long as she can remember. Her passion for the arts is deeply ingrained, a sentiment evident in her conversations and, most importantly, in her work. Having emigrated to Germany, she found great success participating in various art festivals and exhibitions, with her first solo exhibition in 1999, a touring showcase across five branches of Volksbank in Osnabrück.

A pivotal moment in her artistic journey came in 2000, when she met the late Prof. Fr. Marius Zerafa, who profoundly influenced her approach and encouraged her to further expand her artistic versatility. She later returned to Malta, holding her first solo exhibition on the island in 2003 at the German-Maltese Circle in Valletta.

Josanne works across various media, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, and plaster, demonstrating her adaptability and creative depth. Over the years, she has held 19 solo exhibitions across Germany, forging strong connections with audiences through her art, which often captures the essence of Maltese seascapes and landscapes - a lasting source of inspiration for her. Beyond landscapes, her work also reflects an empathetic connection to humanity, capturing emotions and personal narratives through her artistic expression.

A Journey Through Blue
Upon visiting Breaking the Surface, one immediately notices Josanne's deep connection with the colour blue - a shade that embodies peace, tranquility, and serenity. Her clean, luminous colour application allows the viewer to feel the warmth of the sun's rays as they radiate from the canvas. Her signature depictions of boats and luzzus (traditional Maltese fishing boats) highlight her expertise in watercolour, where her passion is evident in every brushstroke.
A particularly striking piece in this exhibition is a large abstract mixed-media artwork, where Josanne steps beyond her comfort zone. This bold three-dimensional exploration of blue offers a fresh perspective on her love for the sea, bringing an evocative, semi-abstract interpretation of its depths.
Now, as Malta welcomes sunnier days and warmer weather, the exhibition becomes even more immersive, reflecting the artist's childhood memories and the serenity of the Mediterranean.
You are invited to visit the exhibition at Art by the Seaside Gallery, located at 65 Triq il-Mina tax-Xatt, Senglea.
