The Ministry for Social Policy and Children's Rights has signed a social agreement with Dar Leopoldo - a residence run by the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation, which serves as a shelter for homeless men aged between 16 and 65 years.
In a statement Thursday, government said that the residence offers a total of 18 beds, all in 'semi-independent living quarters.
This home not only serves as a 24-hour shelter, but also provides psychosocial support, mentoring, and training that encourages these individuals to regain independent living, the statement said.
The aim is to improve the personal and social development of these individuals, it said.
The signing of this agreement took place in the presence of the Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon, together with the management of Dar Leopoldo.
"We are allocating around €1 million over three years in total. The investment is double that of the previous agreement signed three years ago. This is a government that leaves no one behind because we truly believe in inclusion and a just society that believes in everyone's potential," Falzon said.
Chairperson of the Suret il-Bniedem Foundation Marique Sciberras said that these individuals seek shelter after going through complex circumstances, often linked to mental health challenges.
"We believe these individuals do not only need shelter, but also a long-term psychosocial support package with the help of professionals, so that eventually each person can rebuild their life and reintegrate into society," Sciberras said.
