EU engagement with the US must be premised on a clear understanding of our shared objectives Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism Ian Borg said.
Borg underscored the importance of a resilient and cooperative EU-US relationship during the Gymnich Informal Meeting of EU Foreign Ministers hosted by the Polish Presidency of the EU, in Warsaw, on Thursday.
"EU-US unity must remain our greatest strength. EU engagement with the US must be premised on a clear understanding of our shared objectives, and the differences in how we pursue them must not overshadow the common ground we stand on."
He emphasised that this commitment to strong EU-US relations is essential in ongoing efforts towards peace in the Middle East and in Ukraine, combining the strategic influence of the US with the extensive regional engagement and diplomatic networks of the EU. "These should be leveraged, wherever possible, to deliver more effective, complementary responses to these challenges," Deputy Prime Minister Borg stated.
Borg also referred to the recent escalating developments in Gaza, reiterating Malta's call for a lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages and stronger efforts to ensure that UNRWA remains a crucial lifeline of humanitarian support to civilians caught in this cycle of violence. He also reaffirmed the EU's sustained support for a two-state solution.
During the meeting Borg also briefed fellow EU foreign ministers on the case of the vessel Conscience and Malta's support to its passengers and crew in recent days, in line with international regulations.
