The title Karoo Pietà evokes Michelangelo's iconic work, yet it reinterprets its emotional resonance through Glendine's lived experience, particularly her heart-wrenching loss of one of her sons. This fusion of the Karoo's stark beauty and the Madonna's profound symbolism creates a visual and emotional bridge between Malta and South Africa, between faith and landscape, and between sorrow and solace. Through her work, Glendine not only mourns but also embraces the quiet strength that emerges from grief, offering viewers a powerful and beautiful testament to the enduring nature of love and the search for grace in times of hardship.
Glendine's work is deeply rooted in both South Africa's cultural heritage and the breathtaking landscapes that shape the region. Born and raised in Namibia, her creative spark was nurtured through painting with her grandmother, Zizi, the wife of the renowned poet DJ Opperman. After studying fine art at Pretoria Technikon, she began carving out a distinct artistic voice, particularly focused on the dramatic beauty of the South African landscape. Her work often features evocative representations of the Karoo, as well as intimate still lifes and the powerful Karoo Madonna series.
As a single mother, Glendine's personal experiences resonate strongly in her art. Her Karoo Madonna and still life works are imbued with themes of strength, resilience and the quiet power of womanhood. Drawing from her own experiences of motherhood and single parenthood, Glendine celebrates the enduring spirit of women in all their forms.
For 15 years, Glendine lived in the Klein Karoo, a region whose vast landscapes, rugged mountains, historic homes and tranquil night skies have become a continual source of inspiration. Her paintings capture the beauty and harshness of the desert, each work reflecting the unique essence of the region.
In 2011, Glendine faced the devastating loss of her eldest son in a tragic car accident. This loss marked a transformative moment in her artistic journey, as she began embracing a more raw and emotionally expressive approach to her work. No longer bound by commercial art conventions, Glendine's art became more authentic and unguarded, mirroring the depth of her grief and her inner strength.
Today, Glendine continues to evolve as an artist, exploring bold abstraction, vibrant colours, and mixed media. While her work has become more experimental, her connection to the Karoo remains a central element of her practice. Now based in Cape Town, she continues to draw inspiration from the region's vast and subtle beauty, all while pushing the boundaries of her artistic exploration.
