A new bronze bust has been unveiled at Gnien l-Għannejja Żwieten in Żejtun, celebrating the life and legacy of renowned Maltese folk singer Frans Mifsud, affectionately known as ta' Vestru among the folk-singing community.

History is not solely shaped by leaders or figures of power, but also by those who, through their passion and dedication, enrich cultural traditions. Sculptor Chris Ebejer, entrusted with crafting this poignant tribute, meticulously studied photographs and videos of Frans to capture not just his likeness, but his true character - his signature posture, the subtle tilt of his head, and the deep expression lines that conveyed his soul. Through extraordinary artistic skill, Ebejer has ensured that Frans' legacy continues to resonate in the garden alongside other esteemed figures.

The unveiling ceremony was introduced by Charles Seychell, a close relative of Frans, and featured moving tributes from family members, friends and distinguished folklorists namely Guzé Gatt, Charles Coleiro and Noel D'Amato. MP Janice Chetcuti, Frans' niece, shared touching memories of her late uncle, reinforcing the power of shared storytelling in preserving his spirit.

Ebejer reflected on the creative process behind sculpting the bust, followed by its official unveiling by Mary Mifsud, Frans' wife. The bust was then blessed by Kan. Anton Galea Scannura, archpriest of Żejtun.

In a deeply emotional tribute, a group of folk singers and close friends honoured their beloved companion by performing spontaneous, heartfelt verses, accompanied by live guitar music played by Ion Mifsud, Frans' son. The warm melodies and poetic lyrics ensured that his voice, though absent in presence, would never fade in memory.

This bronze tribute stands as a lasting testament to Frans Mifsud's indelible mark on Maltese folk music, ensuring his passion and legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
