Momentum on Thursday expressed deep concern and disappointment at Foreign Minister Ian Borg's astonishing decision to nominate U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a social media post, Minister Borg claimed to have met with Donald Trump in New York, where he proudly presented him with a personal letter nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Borg's post celebrates Trump as a peacemaker for his supposed role in mediating between Armenia and Azerbaijan, an assertion that is both historically inaccurate and politically baffling, Momentum said.

What is even more troubling, however, is the Minister's apparent belief that Donald Trump,  a political figure who has sown division, hatred, and mistrust within his own country and far beyond, is somehow worthy of the world's highest honour for peace.

Trump's record is well-documented:

He fanned racial tension and violence across the United States.

He undermined democratic institutions, refused to accept electoral outcomes, and inspired an insurrection in the U.S. Capitol.

He alienated allies and weakened international cooperation through reckless, confrontational policies.

Carmel Asciak, Momentum spokesperson, stated: "For Malta's Foreign Minister to publicly glorify such a figure not only displays poor judgment but undermines Malta's credibility as a nation committed to diplomacy, human rights, and peace.

Minister Borg's nomination of Trump sends the wrong message at a time when the world desperately needs leadership rooted in truth, compassion, and unity, not populism and self-interest.

Momentum therefore called on Minister Borg to retract his ill-conceived nomination and to clarify how this decision aligns with Malta's longstanding commitment to peace, dialogue, and respect among nations".
