It is a great shame for our country that Ian Borg, on behalf of the Government of Malta, has formally expressed support for and nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, ADPD The Green Party said Friday.
This step appears completely inconsistent with the Maltese Government's position just a few days ago, when it formally recognized Palestine as a state-while Trump (like previous US Presidents) provided the destructive weapons that enabled the genocide in Gaza.
At least in its rhetoric, in international fora, the Maltese government has often spoken about the importance of peace, human rights, and equality. This nomination confirms how empty and superficial that rhetoric truly is.
Donald Trump is a controversial figure who, during his presidency, was and remains known for divisive politics, hate speech, and his clear support for Israel's military actions, including those that have led to the tragic conditions currently suffered by Palestinians in Gaza. Therefore, any support for such a nomination not only demonstrates a lack of political sensitivity but also further undermines what little international credibility our country still has, ADPD said.
ADPD-The Green Party Chairperson Sandra Gauci stated:
"All this gives the impression that Minister Ian Borg's gesture is merely a public relations move, meant to look good in the eyes of the Trump Administration, rather than reflecting consistent principles and solid values. The Maltese Government's gesture comes across as servile and opportunistically flattering, which brings shame upon us. The Maltese people deserve better representatives-ones who do not embarrass Malta before the democratic world."
