The Service Dogs Malta Foundation has secured European funds through the Erasmus+ programme to enhance its training and services for persons with disabilities. The announcement was made during a visit by Minister for European Funds and Electoral Programme Implementation Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and SEM Chief Executive Rodrick Zerafa, who met the Foundation's members, trainers and volunteers.
With the support of Servizzi Ewropej f'Malta (SEM), the Foundation will implement two mobility projects in Hungary, involving training in schools and hospitals. These projects aim to accredit the Foundation's services by introducing innovative methods, improving international collaboration, and ensuring its trainers remain up to date with the latest technical developments in the field.
The funding will enable the Foundation to train its trainers, puppy raisers and volunteers in modern techniques while fostering stronger cooperation with medical and social institutions. This investment will allow more individuals with conditions such as autism, hearing or mobility impairments, and diabetes to benefit from specialised support.
Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi praised the Foundation's dedication, stating that "it is very satisfying to see how European funds are reaching people directly." He noted that even small amounts of funding can make a significant difference for organisations like Service Dogs Malta, allowing them to continue providing quality services to those in need. The Minister also encouraged other NGOs to explore similar opportunities through SEM.
SEM CEO Rodrick Zerafa highlighted how such projects give organisations the tools to strengthen their operations and improve quality of life. He said the Erasmus+ training has allowed the Foundation to learn from successful practices abroad and apply them locally.
Foundation founder Joseph Stafrace expressed gratitude for the funding and acknowledged SEM's support during the application process. Established in 2013, the Service Dogs Malta Foundation provides professionally trained service dogs to help persons with disabilities live more independent and dignified lives.
