Prime Minister Robert Abela has said that the government intends to give all traditional pastimes constitutional safeguards, when asked about hunting.

He also mentioned that it will include sports.

He said all hobbies deserve recognition and protection under the constitution when practised responsibly.

Abela emphasised the connection between a healthy environment and the well-being of the population. "When the environment is healthy - with clean air, proper forestry, and more trees across the islands - it contributes to mental health and allows people to enjoy all their pastimes," he said. He added that pastimes should be exercised responsibly, following laws and regulations, to ensure they can be enjoyed safely.

Asked specifically about spring hunting, Abela said that every pastime that is exercised within the terms and parameters of the regulations and laws of the country, deserve legislative protection. He said that the need for this protection arose after others attempted to restrict these pastimes. "It was for this reason that we faced significant challenges from those who had an interest in breaking these traditions," he said. "Every time these matters were brought before the European Court of Justice, we engaged top lawyers, and Minister Clint Camilleri personally led the strategy to ensure that, despite the major challenges and attacks we faced, these pastimes would be protected."

Abela also reflected on the societal perspective, acknowledging that while some may not personally engage in certain hobbies, it is important to respect the enjoyment of those who do. "Thousands of people have grown up practising these traditions. Denying them the opportunity to enjoy these pastimes would affect their mental well-being and quality of life," he said.
